Wildlife Sanctuary The Wildlife wing not only looks after the conservation and development of wildlife but also conducts several research programmes related to wildlife. Significant of them are study on flag-ship species, carrying capacity of PAs and man- Animal conflicts with focus on man-elephant conflict. Modern techniques have been introduced for estimation of wildlife population. Periodic wildlife census is carried out to ascertain the trend of its growth. Accordingly, conservation and developmental measures are adopted. Several wildlife projects and action plans have been prepared by MoEF&CC, GoI for better conservation of wildlife which provide appropriate guidance and line of action to be implemented in the field.

The sanctuary area is situated in the districts of Gumla and Simdega between towns of Gumla and Simdega. It is about 25 km. away from Gumla. It was notified as Wildlife Sanctuary in the year of 1990 vide notification no 1174 dated-22-03-1990. The total area of the sanctuary is 18318 hac. This sanctuary is a very important protected area as it is one of the few preferred home for sloth bears. Despite the degraded and almost completely fragmented habitat, the area thrives in sloth bear population. It is located in Deccan peninsula bio geographic zone in the chhotanagpur plateau province (6D). This sanctuary inhabits about important 30 important species of mammals; 153 species of Birds, 25 species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians, 12 species of fishes and many invertebrates and a wide range of flora. It supports the local people as being a part of their traditional practices, supporting their livelihood and by being a means of recreation for them.
